50 Years of Leadership: Celebrating Garth Cooper’s Journey

This year marks an incredible milestone for Albert Jagger as we celebrate 50 years of dedicated service from our Chairman, Garth Cooper. From humble beginnings in the 1970s to steering the company through decades of transformation, Garth’s journey is not only a testament to his leadership but to the enduring strength of a proud family business.

Garth joined his father in 1975, stepping into a business facing significant operational challenges. The site was, as he described it, ageing, cramped, and increasingly inefficient, with manual systems dominating day-to-day operations. He began his career with stock-taking, a process involving handwritten product cards and manual entries into one of the company’s ‘bibles’.

He worked his way around the business, including the warehouse and factory, earning the respect of colleagues by learning toolmaking, welding, and operating the presses himself.

By 1979, Garth introduced Albert Jagger’s first information technology system, improving administrative efficiency. This move reflected his vision to modernise operations and keep the company ahead of the curve.

In 1984, Garth was appointed General Manager, and by 1992, at the height of a difficult economic recession, he had taken the reins from his father to become Managing Director.

Despite the tough economic climate, Garth had a clear vision, to build a business that was more focused on targets, more transparent and more accountable. He introduced management training, regular management meetings, and placed a focus on product development. These initiatives revitalised the business, leading to sales of over £10 million for the first time by 1999/2000.

In 2001, Garth became both Chairman and Managing Director. He took the decision to sell the company’s outdated Green Lane premises and develop a purpose-built office and warehouse nearby. The move improved the company’s operations, boosted morale, and introduced same-day dispatch.

Under Garths leadership, Albert Jagger continued to thrive, achieving record sales of nearly £14 million in 2007/2008.

Garth’s legacy came full circle when both of his sons joined the business, James in 2006 and Andrew in 2012. As they gradually took on greater responsibilities, Garth stepped back from the role of Managing Director in 2016 but embraced his continued position as Chairman. He admits stepping back had not been easy, but his role as Chairman allowed him to focus on broader issues while ensuring the company’s values remained rooted in its family heritage.

Throughout his tenure, Garth has guided Albert Jagger through many challenges, from recessions and pandemics. His leadership, resilience and determination have helped shape the business into an industry leader.

At its core, Albert Jagger remains a family business, and Garth takes immense pride in that identity. His 50 years of service reflect not just professional achievement, but a deep commitment to people, progress, and the enduring values that continue to define our company today.

Please join us in congratulating Garth Cooper on 50 remarkable years of leadership. His journey continues to inspire future generations and set the foundation for a strong and innovative future.
